Sorry, I’m not sorry- questionable tv is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. I love a show that challenges me and blows my mind (like Making a Murderer or Breaking Bad), but that is a post for another day. This is a post about the light, fluffy, fun shows- the ones we might sometimes be embarrassed to admit we watch. So let’s make this a no judgment zone, ok?
I watch a lot of Netflix during football season. I’ve tried (though not very hard) but as much as I wish I was one of those cool girls that liked sports, I just don’t like football. I do like keeping the peace in my household, though. So every Sunday, Monday, and now Thursday (WTF)I put on the headphones and get down and dirty with my Kindle and some of my friends from the Flix. I’m not complaining. These are some of my favorites (no spoilers).
Grace and Frankie
Lily Tomlin (who was nominated for an Emmy for her role) and Jane Fonda star as two lawyers wives, who don’t really like each other all that much, until they find out that their husbands of 40 years are leaving them… for each other. What immediately struck me about Grace and Frankie, after the gay husband plot, is the cast- you will recognize almost every actor. Like Brooklyn Decker as a mom, not a hot girlfriend, so unexpected and delightful. Anyway, it’s laugh-by-yourself funny, touching, and smart enough to not be an embarrassing member of the guilty pleasure club.
Parks and Rec
I know I’m late to the party on this one, but I’m not much of a sit com girl. Shows I love tend to have great character development and you just don’t see that as often in comedies. I have to say though, I without a doubt, care about the characters from Parks and Rec more than another other comedy ever (except maybe Friends).
This one took me a few episodes to get into, I definitely thought it was weird at first, but once I was into it, I was laughing my ass off during every episode. Like tears streaming down my face funny. My boyfriend and I went through a phase where we watched 1 episode before bed every night, and it was such a fun way to end the day.
The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
I hate to say this now, but used to think Ellie Kemper was annoying, and I had very low expectations for this show. But, I was home sick from work one day, and I wanted something to put on that I could fall asleep to. I ended up getting sucked in and found the show to be hilarious and charming. Plus the intro song is so fun and catchy! unnnBREAKABLE.
Ok, just hear me out on this one. I needed something to watch last year when I got my wisdom teeth out. I wanted something addicting that I could binge watch all weekend. One of my friends from work swore up and down that Vampire Diaries wouldn’t be what I was expecting. And it wasn’t! It’s not Twilight or True Blood. It’s a juicy, not totally predictable, surprisingly edgy for the CW, drama. I find myself wishing I could go back to the beginning and watch it all over again without knowing the twists. Definitely the ultimate guilty pleasure!
