I had a blog post all outlined and ready to write when I got home today. Then I went to yoga. And for whatever reason, the message from today’s class decided to creep into my brain and write itself a blog post- so whatever, I’m going with it.
Motivation is kind of a funny thing. Some of us have lots and lots of it, others not so much. The instructor in my yoga class tonight challenged us to think about what motivates us. Not just the easy answers, like “money” and “my family,” but what we would say if we were really honest with ourselves?
Success and self-improvement. I like to do things I’m good at, don’t we all? It’s so much easier for me to head to a yoga class than go for a run right now. Why? Becuase my cardio threshold sucks! I’ve been on a yoga kick lately and I’m close to getting my basket headstand. Wheel pose doesn’t hurt anymore. I’d so much rather continue to practice where I’m seeing improvement than huff and puff around the block.
Affirmation. My Love Language is words of affirmation. I love being validated by other people, especially those I care about and respect. I would way rather get a “hey, great job,” than a pay-check. Ok, maybe not. Either way, if I know someone is depending on me or will be proud of me for something, I’m way more inclined to get off my ass and do it. Hi, I’m Erin and I’m a people pleaser.
My future happiness. I’m pretty good about seeing the big picture when I look at my life. I do things that I don’t want to do now because I know they will bring me happiness in the future. Saving money is the perfect example. My spring wish list is about a mile long, but I really, reeeeeally, want to see more of the world, so I’m putting (most of) my disposable income in my savings account. Not fun now, but I’ll send you a postcard from Greece.
Teamwork and accountability. Especially in a business setting, I love to feel like I’m contributing to the greater good. I’ve had jobs where the whole place falls apart when I go to lunch and jobs where no one notices when I’m gone on vacation for a week. Guess which one I worked harder at?
Inspiration from others. I love reading monthly stats/income reports from other bloggers. Knowing the secrets to someone else’s success is so motivating for me. I’m also a sucker for motivational books. Some of my favorites are Big Magic, The Happiness Project, and Crush It!
What motivates you?
